Kurt Schreiter has been award NSERC’s top fellowship for pursuing his doctoral studies. Congratulations Kurt!

From NSERC’s website: The Vanier CGS program aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health sciences.

Krister Shalm and Kent Fisher join the group

Krister Shalm has joined IQC as a post-doctoral fellow to work with the Quantum Optics and Quantum Information group and the Quantum Photonics Laboratory. Krister has just finished his PhD (or will have by next week) with Aephraim Steinberg at the University of Toronto. He brings with him a CIFAR Junior Fellowship. Welcome Krister!

Kent Fisher has joined the QOQI group for his MSc research. Kent finished his BSc at the University of Guelph last spring and was awarded an NSERC CGS to fund his studies. Welcome Kent!

UW Dean of Science Award won by Jonathan Lavoie

Jonathan Lavoie has been selected for the 2010 University of Waterloo Dean of Science Award for his MSc thesis, Chirped-Pulse Interferometry: Classical dispersion cancellation and analogues of two-photon quantum interference.

The Dean of Science Award is given in recognition of outstanding performance in the Master of Science program. One certificate will normally be awarded annually to a master’s student from each department in the Science faculty in recognition of creative research as presented in the student’s thesis.

Update June 18, 2010: Jonathan received his award from Terry McMahon, Dean of Science, at a special lunch held at the University Club this week.

Deny Hamel wins top NSERC graduate scholarship

Soon to be PhD candidate Deny Hamel has won the NSERC Vanier scholarship for his proposal, “Realization of an efficient source of multiphoton entangled states using novel nonlinear materials”. Congratulations Deny!

From NSERC: The Vanier CGS program aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health; as well as leadership skills. Both Canadian and international students are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship.

Jonathan Lavoie has been awarded the NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Doctoral Scholarship. Congratulations Jonathan!

From NSERC: Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) and NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS) provide financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in master’s or doctoral programs in the natural sciences or engineering. The CGS will be offered to the top-ranked applicants at each level (master’s and doctoral) and the next tier of meritorious applicants will be offered an NSERC PGS. This support allows these scholars to fully concentrate on their studies and seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields.
